Pro-tips from a seasoned plumber for stronger plumbing pipes

We’ve all been there… you get home from a long day of work, more than ready to wash the day off in a relaxing shower, just to look down and see the water getting backed up, again! And who can forget that awful smell of day’s old food coming from your kitchen sink? You want to take simple, achievable, and affordable steps to prevent these everyday annoyances, but you’re not sure where to start. That’s where I come in

There are many plumbers you can Google right now who will come to save the day when you’re having plumbing issues. But I’m not here to just save one day and then go on my way. I am here to become a trusted partner for you whether your plumbing needs are big or small.

So, let’s get started…

First Things First, Let's Prevent Clogged Drains; It's Time To Invest In a Drain Screen.

I’ve been a plumber for almost 30 years, but nothing has taught me the importance of using a drain screen in our bathtub the way living with three women has. This is a definite must to protect your drains from clogging. Placing a screen over your bathtub drain will help prevent hair from clogging your pipes and blocking water flow.

But drain screens aren’t only for the bathtub, they’re a must-have for your kitchen sink as well! They will prevent seeds, vegetable & fruit peels, and other unwanted objects from falling down the drain and ruining your disposal. They are not only easy to install, but are affordable and can be bought for $4 at Wal-Mart or Home Depot.

Second, Let’s Kick a Nasty Cooking Habit; Stop Putting Cooking Oil Down Your Drain!

While drain screens are needed to protect your pipes from hair and other unwanted items, it’s important to remember to never put oil down your drains. Oil will stick to your pipes and ultimately tear them down until you eventually have to replace them. Instead, keep a jar under your kitchen sink and after you’re done cooking, once the oil is cool, pour into the jar instead of down your pipes. It may seem like an annoying extra step in your cooking process, but I promise your wallet will be thanking you in the long run! Adding this to your cooking routine will not only save you money, but also prevent that nasty sink odor from forming.

Third, Give Your Pipes Some TLC Every Now And Then! Don't Worry, You Probably Already Have All The Items Needed To Do This In Your House Now.

All you need is dish soap and hot water. Yup! That’s it, you read that right… you only need two ingredients for this pro-tip! Simply boil two liters of water (give or take) and add in three to four tablespoons of dish-soap. Once your soap and water comes to a boil, take your pot and slowly pour it down the sink. Doing this once every other week will help the grease that is already stuck to your pipes melt back down to a liquid so they can travel down and out of the pipe.

So there you have it, three tips that will go a long way in helping you achieve stronger and healthier pipes at home. I hope you find this helpful and useful!
