How to Become a Plumber in Texas

1) Complete Education

To start the process of becoming a plumber in Texas, you need to have either a High School Diploma or GED Certificate. Make sure to pay close attention in classes like Math and Science because this knowledge is used most in the field.

2) Become an Apprentice

Apprentice programs take 4-5 years to complete and cover all aspects of the plumbing trade. The program is a combination of classroom time and paid on-the -job training. Besides gaining great experience, you’ll have many opportunities to network with everyone you meet while completing the program. Apprenticing is how you’re going to become a great plumber!

3) Get Licensed

Once you’re apprenticeship is done, you can apply to take your licence exam through the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners, where you will also find tools to study. The exam consists of two parts: Multiple choice and a hands on project.

4) Find Job

As a licensed plumber, you’ll be ready to start your job search! Prepare a resume and let people know you’re on the job market. Create an account with LinkedIn, attend conferences, and upload your resume to Indeed, Glassdoor, and Monster. Be sure to check with the company you apprenticed for as well. If you already have a good connection with them and they’re hiring, it could be a win-win.
